Black History Month Reclaiming Narratives

Cynthia Gentle – Network Support Officer (United Voices) at YouthLink Scotland writes about this year’s Black History Month and the recent Black Scottish Awards.

Black History Month focuses on people whose sacrifices, contributions and achievements against a backdrop of racism, inequality and injustice are often forgotten about.

These stories are still largely absent from our Scottish history books and education system, and we work to change this every month of the year. The theme of Black History Month 2024 is particularly poignant: Reclaiming Narratives. This theme calls on Black people to take ownership of their stories, making sure that our voices are heard, our experiences acknowledged, and our contributions recognised.

One of the most effective ways to reclaim narratives is by ensuring that young Black voices are at the forefront of storytelling and sharing experiences. This year at the Black Scottish Awards, sponsored by Black Professionals UK, two members of the United Voices Network were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the community through youth work.

Passion4 Fusion won the Community Organisation of the Year Award and Helene Rodger (CEO) won Diversity Champion of the Year. Jane Akadiri from Touch of Love based in Aberdeen, won a commendation for her Outstanding Contribution to the Black Community.

We are so proud to see more and more voices from the community being seen and heard. Youth work will ensure that young people in Scotland from all backgrounds take up space in areas they have not been included,  and are supported telling stories from their perspectives.
